There’s a certain spiritual mischievousness that draws you in to Martha Groves Perry’s Call Out. This charming album uses roots music to uplift everyday victories and trials. Perry’s music is sinewy, relying on powerful hooks and her welcoming voice to drive her message home. Perry tasks us with calling out and genuinely connecting to each other. The rewards are too high — as are the consequences of not doing so — to pass up.

RACHEL CHOLST, Adobe & teardrops

In “Dumping My Delusion,” Ms. Perry gives us a vocal lesson. Her tone, intonation, phrasings & how she applies her inimitable style is like salty potato chips & dark chocolate. From dark music to riveting in the 57-voice chorus in ‘McKiely’s Song,’ shows the ability of Ms. Perry’s voice to tread through as a pristine ballad singer, traditional interpreter & jazz singer. Impressive.

Martha Groves Perry’s vocals are a disciplined departure from typical mainstream vocals. The music suits her tone as well, dark & melodic, with sufficiently varied styles …. Martha vocalizes with a pinch of deviancy in her aura which allows them to be appealing in a naughty way.

There are moments when Martha grazes the delicacy of expression often provided by the likes of Tom Waits, early Ricki Lee Jones, Tom Wilson (Junkhouse) & Patti Smith. Martha Groves Perry has style with her dark-hued melodies that are tailored with grace.

… exceptionally rendered by Martha who effectively sings with a noirish feel ….The contrasts between the songs are riveting & Martha’s cohesive performance is solid.

She’s also smart enough to have sculpted an original look, an attitude that works well for her because she looks like someone you’d want to hear. Some images are playfully seductive, some are seriously street-smart & many depict a magnetic personality who’s capable of keeping many musical balls in the air at once.

Exceptional photography makes the look of Martha’s 3rd release Call Out … appear quite noirish & compelling. The bolder-than-usual songs explore challenging truths seriously & with humor. Her lyrics are poetic ….

Overall, ‘Call Out’ is a fabulous album, filled with catchy and diverse songs. Highly recommended.

“Anyway is a lovely, catchy organic opening song with fabulous song writing and soulful warm vocals”

“fabulous vocals … a little like Elle King” re: You Might

“Martha comes over a lot like Lulu and Miranda Lambert. This is one of the album’s highlights” re: The Dare

“… a brilliant catchy fun song that will leave you singing along … love the way this song flows, fab lyrics, her vocals on this are little like Dolly Parton” re: Let the Wind Come

“The dynamic ‘Feel Something” is solid blues groove-based and melodic with fantastic vocals and lyrics. I love the way Martha hits some high notes on this song, fabulously slick”

“‘Purely Who You Are’ is my favourite song on the album, I love the flow coupled with harmonica, it’s got a solid groove and comes across like Ry Cooder, Bob Dylan and Chris Issak. Martha’s vocals here are quite subtle yet alluring, this song just hypnotizes you and pulls you in”

“‘The Talk’ is more organic yet energy driven and vibrant, and reminds me a lot of Marianne Faithfull meets Adele, only more up-tempo and groove based and more mysterious”

“‘Four Leaf Clover is upbeat and catchy with soulful vocals, this song has a solid melodic vibe and is excellent”

“My other favourite song on the album is the fantastic ‘Dumping My Delusion’, this track has a solid drum and bass groove, it’s quite electric and again it pulls you into its gorgeous grooves, there’s a lot going on this track, such as saxophone, giving it a deep smoky sexy feel”

“The catchy pop-rock of ‘McKiely’s Song’ reminds me of Donna Lewis, and here the vocal harmonies are delightful”

“‘Little Life’ has an earth folky acoustic feel a la Blackmores Night crossed with Belinda Carlisle, superb final track”

The singer-songwriter Martha Groves Perry returns with her 3rd release, where a poetic, melodic and groove filled presence is appreciated across the 12 originals.

You might be reminded of Tom Waits, Tom Petty or Natalie Merchant when listening to these Americana gems, as Perry navigates around light vs dark, love vs hate and beauty against ugliness on this rich, harmonic and very literate body of work.

Poetic … melodic … expressive voice … poetic singing … graceful song craft … beauty and eloquence …

San Francisco’s Martha Groves Perry brings a variety of appealing vocal approaches to Call Out. The result is a diverse and interesting listen that encourages the listener to revisit the album.

Across a dozen songs, Perry strives for a community of understanding, one that embraces light, forgiveness, and joy, while utilizing her music and words to communicate her strongest passions.

Americana with a twist of retro pop – I quite enjoyed this one.

“Overall, this album is an exceptional example of Perry’s singer-songwriter skills. Here her varied musical background and life experience are out in the open as she adds assorted elements of multiple music genres to her individualistic insights to tunefully tell her truth. Her sharp, no-nonsense numbers come complete with pensive thought-provoking lyrics that acknowledge the good, the bad, and the ugly in an intriguing, entertaining presentation of oft’times contrasting cuts and familiar universal themes.”
