I few years ago, I reconnected with someone I had not thought of in years and realized that for them, there was something unresolved in their memories of me. Suddenly, as is my wont, I felt bad about that. After a gut check, I realized that their failure to move on was not my responsibility because I did nothing wrong. I in large part shook the need and habit to be a people pleaser about 10 years ago, but I have a complicated relationship with might-have-beens. With this song, I’m attempting to declare my independence from this particular might-have-been and probably also from the tension between wanting to give everyone something to smile about and rejoicing as I shake the dust off my feet.
This song almost was the title track because the vibe and groove that my producer, Kenny Schick, put on it is so infectious and blends perfectly the tension between old habits and new ways of being. I love the personal strength this song demonstrates, both lyrically and in Kenny’s arrangement.
In addition to songwriting, lead vocals, and writing the harmony vocals, I performed backing vocals on this song. Kenny Schick, my producer, also sang backing vocals and played or programmed all of the instruments. Kenny recorded his parts at Basement3Productions in Nashville, Tennessee, and I recorded my parts in March 2022 with Steven Glaze at ToneFreq Studio in San Jose, California.
