Be Right Back is a fresh, guitar-driven rock song in the tradition of Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, and Linda Ronstadt but with Martha’s distinctive soulful voice and approach. The irresistible groove and infectious melody combine with engaging lyrics, retro undertones, and fun surprises in this upbeat love song that sticks in your head and begs you to sing along.

This is the first song I wrote while we were staying in San Francisco in January 2019 while our Sunnyvale home was getting prepped to be sold. We were in Haight/Ashbury, and I had *just* about left an insanely stressful job. These were 3 golden weeks to stare at the wall, take walks with my dog, and generally off-gas from the stress before diving into a few more months to wrap things up nicely.
During this time, I remembered myself. I was sleeping well, being playful and silly, and I felt a joy I hadn’t in a long time. My husband felt like he “got his wife back.” I recognized, enjoyed, and embraced myself even as I contemplated my upcoming new life in SF, and who and how I wanted to be. I think the song *sounds* like San Francisco, because all of my senses were open to this city I was coming to love, and that is reflected in the melody and lyrics. It’s a simple song, really just a love song to my husband and the life we were creating together in San Francisco, so it means a lot to me.
I wrote the song in January 2019, then added Verse 2 and Verse 4 at Pat Thrall’s suggestion in January 2025.
