Song Story: Colored Pencils

One afternoon in art class when I was in 4th grade, my art teacher was apparently not feeling terribly inspired because she simply handed out paper, crayons, and colored pencils and told us to draw whatever we wanted. All the kids dove into their house, tree, flower pictures, and instead I cried the whole period because I couldn’t figure out what to draw because everything was “too easy,” which pretty much tells you all you need to know about me.

This song is based on that memory – getting all caught up in myself, going through a tough time, and coming out the other end better off, realizing that discomfort is not something to avoid because it leads to clarity. I’m also poking fun at the fact that I sometimes have a hard time remembering to breathe.

In addition to songwriting, lead vocals, and writing the harmony vocals, I played electric guitar and performed backing vocals on this song. Kenny Schick, my producer, also sang backing vocals and played or programmed all of the other instruments. Kenny recorded his parts at Basement3Productions in Boulder Creek, California, where I also recorded my vocals and electric guitar parts in March 2016.
