This song took shape over the year from May 2020 to May 2021, during which I rewrote large sections in response to events taking place worldwide, nationally, and in my own neighborhood in San Francisco during those incredibly difficult 12 months. This song changed my songwriting. Until this song, my songwriting was strictly introspective, sticking closely to my commitment to stay on my side of the street. Events outside me, as well as a personal request from a 7 year old girl, gave me the courage to complete this song and to play and sing it like I mean it. Kenny, my producer, put a vibe on this song that perfectly captures the feeling of that time, and both of us were crying while I recorded it.
This song will always be incredibly special to me. I am grateful for the affirmation that Kenny’s interpretation of it provides. I also treasure the many expressions of relief and gratitude I’ve received from those who have heard me play it, because it expresses the feeling of that time, which is difficult, but needs representing in order to heal.
In addition to songwriting, lead vocals, and writing the harmony vocals, I performed backing vocals on this song. Kenny Schick, my producer, also sang – and screamed – backing vocals and played or programmed all of the instruments. Kenny recorded his parts at Basement3Productions in Nashville, Tennessee, and I recorded my parts in March 2022 with Steven Glaze at ToneFreq Studio in San Jose, California.
