Short Bio

Martha Groves Perry is a singer-songwriter, entertainer, and multi-instrumentalist based in San Francisco, California. Her bold, original Alternative Rock has a provocative clarity with flavors of Americana and blues. Her penetrating lyrics reflect the fearless truth-telling and unbothered amusement of a seasoned, female point of view.

Some characterize Martha’s music as a cross between Tom Waits, early Gwen Stefani, and the Indigo Girls, and her distinctive vocal style has been placed alongside those of Natalie Merchant, Stevie Nicks, Ricki Lee Jones, and Patti Smith. Martha captivates audiences with a magnetic stage presence alongside committed, engaging performances of her meaningful and substantive songs.

Martha is currently recording new material with Clarence Collins (Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Little Anthony and the Imperials) and Pat Thrall (Pat Travers Band, Hughes/Thrall, Meatloaf, Asia, etc + 4 Grammy nominations). The first single from this exciting collaboration – BE RIGHT BACK – released on January 16, 2026. Two more singles are already recorded, with 3-4 additional singles in production.

Martha celebrated the 2023 release of Call Out, her second LP and third release, with a sold out album release show at Art Boutiki Music Hall in San Jose CA followed by a tour in the US midwest & southeast including a debut in Nashville.

There are moments when Martha grazes the delicacy of expression often provided by the likes of Tom Waits, early Ricki Lee Jones, Tom Wilson (Junkhouse) & Patti Smith.

… [this album] shows the ability of Ms. Perry’s voice to tread through as a pristine ballad singer, traditional interpreter & jazz singer. Impressive.

In “Dumping My Delusion,” Ms. Perry gives us a vocal lesson. Her tone, intonation, phrasings & how she applies her inimitable style is like salty potato chips & dark chocolate.

Straight from the Heart: Martha Groves Perry sings with courage.

J. POET, EAST BAY EXPRESS

You might be reminded of Tom Waits, Tom Petty or Natalie Merchant when listening to these Americana gems, as Perry navigates around light vs dark, love vs hate and beauty against ugliness on this rich, harmonic and very literate body of work.

Poetic … melodic … expressive voice … poetic singing … graceful song craft … beauty and eloquence

Across a dozen songs, Perry strives for a community of understanding, one that embraces light, forgiveness, and joy, while utilizing her music and words to communicate her strongest passions.

DOnALD TEPLYSKE, Fervor Coulee: Roots Music Opinion

Martha found ways to enfold the contradictions she saw in daily life including the underrepresented voice of the female experience, the hopefulness in the face of hopelessness and the need to engage with feeling when overwhelming experiences in life leave you numb.

… a great singer-songwriter. I hope you love her music as much as I do.

“Overall, this album is an exceptional example of Perry’s singer-songwriter skills …. Her sharp, no-nonsense numbers come complete with pensive thought-provoking lyrics that acknowledge the good, the bad, and the ugly in an intriguing, entertaining presentation of oft’times contrasting cuts and familiar universal themes.”
